Sustainability in the vineyard
by Georgina Estrada on 12 July, 2021

The challenge, mission and commitment of winery owners is to grow in a sustained and sustainable manner.

Tourism is undoubtedly one of Mexico's most important economic engines. In recent decades, wine tourism has gained more and more strength, and in states such as Baja California, growth has been exponential.

In the Guadalupe Valley, some wineries have been concerned about growing, but it is important to consider sustainability, always favoring the optimization of resources

Commitment to the environment must be a priority

Because the actions we take impact our planet and future generations.

The trend: sustainability

Biodynamism and the development of organic vineyards seeking sustainable practices with the land are of vital importance today.

They are also a worldwide trend to preserve the soil in better conditions and thus also seek to impact the quality of the wine.

Water is an indispensable resource in field processes, and the use of new technologies makes it possible to use it efficiently for good hydration.

One strategy is reservoirs where water is collected and the vineyards are irrigated from it.

During the winter, when the vines are in their dormancy period and it usually rains, water is accumulated for irrigation in the following spring and summer. And it is increasingly common for wineries to have wastewater treatment plants for garden irrigation.

Electricity is expensive and its traditional generation is polluting, which is why several wineries have also been concerned about investing in solar energy from panels, as it is not only about saving energy, but also about producing it.

Fighting harmful fauna in a natural way

Falconry is an activity that more and more wineries are adopting.

It consists of controlling harmful fauna by means of Harris hawks, which are used in airports, since any bird that impacts against the turbine of an airplane can be very dangerous. In this other case, the harriers control both the presence of birds and some small rodents in the vineyards, being an eco-friendly practice. When it comes to controlling harmful fauna, moles can endanger the health of the plants, which is why Beagle dogs are used (due to their acute sense of smell) to control the presence of rodents. At El Cielo winery, a case close to me, they have successfully implemented both practices.

Growing steadily and sustainably

The Guadalupe Valley is a paradise that not only produces wines, but also receives more tourists every day. The challenge, mission and commitment of those who own wineries is to grow in a sustained and sustainable way, because it not only means following a pattern of growth, but making the investment last over time by guaranteeing that many generations will be able to enjoy the sunrises, sunsets and wines that Mother Nature gives us every year.

Taste a lot and drink little.
