Our country is rich in land, which has nutrients for agriculture and the cultivation of fruits and vegetables, however there are parts of the country where both the soil and the climate are ideal for making wine, these are known as wine regions .

At Vinos el Cielo we like to share information about red wine , which is why on our platform you can find publications that help you learn more about this world so that when you buy a wine you know more about it.

Today we are going to talk about the main wine regions in Mexico , their characteristics, as well as recommendations of some wines originating from each of them.

Wine regions of Mexico

Now, as we mentioned before, we are going to talk in detail about the different regions, states and cities that produce wine in Mexico.

1.- Baja California

The first region, and possibly one of the richest and most popular today, is Baja California, specifically the city of Ensenada. Approximately 85% of Mexican red wine is produced here.

This is due to the characteristics of the area, as it stands out for its Mediterranean climate where summers are warm and winters are cold. The city With a long winemaking tradition dating back to the 19th century , today the region is home to numerous wineries and vineyards that grow a wide variety of grapes, including traditional ones such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay , as well as some more exotic varieties.

Among the most recognized wine subregions are the Guadalupe Valley , San Antonio de las Minas, Ojos Negros and the Santo Tomás Valley . Each of these areas has its own particularities in terms of soils, microclimates and styles of wines produced.

The Guadalupe Valley , in particular, is considered the heart of Baja California's wine region . Many of the most famous and renowned wineries are located here, some of which offer wine tastings for their visitors.

Ensenada and its wine region have gained international recognition for the quality of their wines, winning awards and accolades in competitions and tastings around the world. For example, one of our wines is Sirius , which obtained 94 points in the DECANTER Nebbiolos of the world tasting .

2.- Querétaro

In second place in terms of wine production in Mexico is the State of Querétaro, home of the Cheese and Wine Festival where visitors can enjoy tastings of Mexican wine from different wineries in the country.

The most notable wines from this region are the white and sparkling wines, since the semi-arid climate and altitude of the area (1,500 to 2,000 meters) are ideal for producing these delicious wines. Among the most important municipalities in terms of wine production are Tequisquiapan, Ezequiel Montes and San Juan del Río .

Within the variety of grapes you can find white grapes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier , while among the red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Tempranillo stand out .

3.- Aguascalientes

Another of the most important wine regions in Mexico is Aguascalientes, this state in central Mexico also has a wine tradition that dates back to the 16th century when the Spanish introduced the vine to this region.

It was not until the 1990s that wineries were established that boosted the area within the wine market .

The success of this region is due to its semi-arid and continental climate, in other words, the winters are cold and the summers are quite warm. The richness of the soil makes the area stand out for its production of quality red and white wines .

4.- Coahuila

In fourth place we have another state in the northern part of the country, Coahuila , especially Santa María de las Parras , this area is known for its red wines.

This region is characterized by its low humidity levels which, when combined with the altitude, allows for the production of rich wines such as Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon , Shiraz, Chardonnay and Semillon .

5.- Zacatecas

Although it is close to Aguascalientes, Zacatecas is one of the most recent and youngest in terms of its immersion in wine production , there are those who would think that this area is not ideal due to its conditions since the climate in Zacatecas is semi-desert, with cold winters and hot summers.

However, what makes this area have the conditions to produce wine is its altitude that can vary between 2,000 and 2,500 meters , this contributes to the concentration of flavors and aromas in the grapes, generating wines with distinctive character.

The soils of this state are mainly of volcanic origin , which influences the flavor of the wines produced in the region. Among the grape varieties grown in Zacatecas are Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc .

These are just 5 wine regions in Mexico . If you are interested in learning more about red wine , keep an eye on our blog. Also, if you liked our article, don't forget to share it on social media so that more people can learn about Mexican wines .
