In recent years, Mexico has become a focus of attention for many travelers, not only because of our vibrant culture, delicious food and beautiful landscapes, but it is also an essential destination for all wine lovers .

And it's no surprise, since our country has a winemaking tradition that dates back hundreds of years, dating back to colonial times. So, if you love Mexican wine , you can't miss out on this growing trend that combines the fun of traveling and the incredible of tasting the best that Mexico's most outstanding wine regions have to offer.

Do you want to know what we are talking about? Then keep reading as we will give you a short tour of the best wine-growing lands in Mexico , where travelers live a unique experience that goes beyond wine tastings .

What is wine tourism?

First, let's start with the basics: what is wine tourism ? Also known as oenological tourism or wine tourism , it is an activity that involves visiting vineyards, wineries or festivals to experience first-hand the wine culture of a region.

During this visit, travelers have the opportunity to learn about the wine production process , explore local wine-related traditions, meet producers and winemakers, and enjoy the beauty of wine landscapes, all while tasting a variety of high-quality wines.

In addition, wine tourism in Mexico also promotes local culture and gastronomy, since apart from wine-related activities, wine tourism often includes the possibility of enjoying the best dishes of the region accompanied by local wines.

Where to do wine tourism in Mexico?

You've probably heard that Mexico's red wines are of extraordinary quality, and it's true. In recent decades, the Mexican wine industry has made significant progress, with many wineries and vineyards in our country winning awards and recognition in international competitions.

If you have the desire to travel and check how true this is, then you cannot remove the following two places from your list of mandatory stops on your wine route .

1.- Baja California

The northwest of Mexico is one of the most famous and emblematic wine regions in the country. Thanks to the combination of its Mediterranean climate and fertile soils, this area has become the heart of Mexican wine tourism .

Within the entire expanse of this state, the Guadalupe Valley is home to some of the best vineyards in the entire country. Here, as a visitor, you can tour the picturesque wineries and wineries that produce a large number of different varieties of wine.

Although in Ensenada you will find several wine subregions , certainly none will offer you an experience as unique and pleasant as the one that the Guadalupe Valley has for you.

To get there from any state in Mexico, you must fly to the city of Tijuana and rent a car or hire private transportation to drive approximately 150 kilometers south. Lodging options are varied, from small bed & breakfasts to luxury hotels both in the city of Ensenada and nestled among the mountains of the Valley.

Wine experience in El Cielo

In this place you will not only enjoy incredible wine tours guided by experts, but also wineries such as El Cielo offer you the opportunity to stay in luxury hotels so that you can live the complete experience of getting to know and observing the natural environment up close and tasting the wines in a relaxed and romantic atmosphere.

A day in heaven

The wineries of the Guadalupe Valley offer experiences that include tours of the vineyards and wineries where they show the complete process of wine making. At El Cielo you can live the most complete experience called “ A day in El Cielo ”.

It all starts with breakfast at the Polaris restaurant. Afterwards, visitors get to know the Harris's Hawks, who are part of the biological control of wildlife in the vineyard. They are part of an activity called falconry , which has been used for many years in airports, for example, to hunt birds that may be dangerous for the turbines of airplanes; these Hawks also happen to love eating grapes.

As part of these activities, the winery continues with a tour of the vineyard where it is possible to learn about the soil, the plants and the characteristics of the vines that grow within the property. After this, the winery descends into the underground cellar to taste an interesting variety of wines in the midst of tanks and barrels. The experience continues with a perfectly paired meal and ends with a chocolate tasting.

This is just one example of the many activities you can do to get closer to the world of wine. In one of the more than 100 wineries in the area you will find tastings, restaurants with local cuisine and interesting proposals and fusions, as well as the possibility of learning about the winemaking process from the field to the glass.

During the harvest season you can enjoy concerts, wine pairing dinners and even the famous Paella Competition that marks the closing of the seasonal festivities.

2.- Querétaro

On the other hand, central Mexico also deserves attention when it comes to high-quality wines , since Baja California is not the only country that has the perfect climate for wine production .

In Querétaro, visitors can enjoy an authentic feast of local flavors, combining the elegance of the vineyards with the exquisite gastronomy of the Cheese and Wine Route , where the best wineries in the region will allow you to taste sparkling wines accompanied by a variety of artisanal cheeses.

Likewise, in Querétaro many vineyards and wineries offer guided tours throughout the year, which is another option to learn more about wine and its production process.

During these tours, visitors can explore the winery facilities, see the oak barrels where the wines mature, and of course, taste the freshly made wines while learning about the techniques and history of winemaking in Querétaro .

As you may have noticed, wine tourism in Mexico is an exciting experience full of sensations that combines the passion for wine with the rich culture and natural beauty of our country. Whether you decide to visit the wineries and vineyards of Baja California or Querétaro, we know that in either of those places you will enjoy and be participating in the best things and traditions that Mexico has to offer: wine tourism .

Don't forget to also investigate the activities offered by other states such as Coahuila, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí, states that have gradually positioned themselves as wine tourism destinations with very interesting activities, delicious food and good wines.
